South Bend Central High School, 1954 – 55
Thomas Gustafson swam for South Bend Central High School. At the
1954 state championships Gustafson won the first ever 150-yard individual
medley, while also placing sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke, helping his
team to a runner-up finish. His senior year, Gustafson repeated as
champion in the individual medley, shaving almost 6 seconds off his
previous year’s time, setting a new state record. He placed sixth again in
the breaststroke and his team claimed the state title.
Gustafson continued his professional career in South Bend where he
retired as a Detective Sergeant with the South Bend Police Department.
Gustafson passed away June 22, 2016.
