Richard’s tenure at South Bend Riley High School began in 1951 and spanned six years, where his teams won state championships in 1956 and 1957.  His teams won two boys state team championships and produced five individual state champions and three state runner-up athletes while establishing two individual state records.  Under his tenure, the 200-yard medley relay and 200-yard freestyle relay teams won state championships while setting state records in 1957.

Richard is a 1951 graduate of the University of Notre Dame where he earned his degree in Physical Education.  By 1952, Richard was selected as the South Bend Riley Athletic Director.  Following his career in South Bend, Richard went on to coach for several high school teams and then was retained by Michigan State University as head swimming and diving coach from 1970-1987.  Richard continued to coach the Beaufort Masters Swim Team in South Carolina, where his teams earned an astounding 17 straight state championships.
