Richard “Dick” Braman

Gary Mann High School, 1951 – 52


Richard “Dick” Braman was both a swimmer and a diver for Horace Mann High School in Gary, Indiana. At the 1951 state championships, he took home a silver for diving and a bronze for the 100-yard backstroke. At the 1952 championships, his senior year, he repeated his bronze performance in the backstroke and captured the gold for diving. He helped his team to third-place finishes in 1951 and 1952. Braman went on to attend Indiana University where he received his Bachelor of Science in Business. He then served as an officer in the United State Air Force in Japan and Texas. After his service, he returned to Indiana and joined his father and brother in the family insurance business which his father started in 1926. He and his brother Bill continued in the family business until they sold it and retired in 2009. Braman was married to Judy Novitsky and they had two boys. Judy passed away in 1990. He later married Lynn Sherman Zelkowitz, and together they have eight grandchildren. They divide their time between Chicago and Arizona.
