Richard Allen

Bloomington University High School, 1961-62

Richard Allen swam for The University School of Bloomington and won state championships in the 400-yard freestyle and 200-yard freestyle, setting state records in both events at the 1962 championships. He helped his team to a fifth-place finish. He shaved three seconds off of the previous 200-yard freestyle record and more than 6 seconds off the 400-yard freestyle record. Allen then attended Indiana University and was an All-American and three-year letterman for the Hoosiers, helping the team to a couple of NCAA runner-up finishes. He was an even better long-course swimmer, competing in the 1960 and 1964 Olympic Trials. At the 1961 long course nationals he was part of the winning 800-meter freestyle relay. Allen earned his Bachelor’s degree in Physics and then earned his Law Degree in 1969 both from Indiana. He was a Deputy Assistant Inspector General for the United States Department of Agriculture and retired in 1995. Richard now resides in Montana with his wife Karen. They have two children, Matthew and Amanda.
