Pete Teagarden

Ben Davis High School / Pike High School, 1972 – 2002


Pete Teagarden coached state champion divers at both Ben Davis High School and Pike High School. He coached Ben Davis High School for 12 years, where he coached two diving state champions and three runners-up who were part of three state championship teams. Two of his Ben Davis divers also won the IHSAA Mental Attitude Award. During his years at Pike, Teagarden was the diving coach for Dylan Nichols who was runner-up and state champion. Teagarden also coached diving at Carmel High School and was part of four state championship teams. Pete, an Indianapolis native, graduated from Speedway High School. He attended Miami University where he was a member of the swimming and diving team. He majored in Mathematics education and graduated in 1972. Teagarden returned to his alma mater, Speedway High School, in 1973 and coached swimming and diving. After three years, he moved on to Ben Davis High School where he was the first diving coach. While at Ben Davis, he also became the director of AAU diving and hosted diving meets during the winter and summer. During this time, the number of registered AAU divers grew from 70 to 300. Teagarden left Ben Davis to start Dive Indy in 1988. He developed 9 additional state champions as a club coach. Teagarden worked with legendary diving coaches Hobie Billingsley, Dick Kimball, Ron O’Brien and Van Austin. He continues to coach with Ripfest Diving Camp. Teagarden lives in Indianapolis and has two daughters, Lora and Katie, both accomplished athletes.
