Katie (Simmons) Smart

Carmel High School, 1997 – 2000


She was part of the 1997-2000 Carmel High School girls state championship teams. During that span, Katie was part of 8 championship relays, which continued Carmel’s winning legacy. In her individual swims, she was a two-time state champion. As a freshman, she was runner-up in the 100- yard breaststroke. Her sophomore year, she won the 100-yard breaststroke and touched fourth in the 200-yard freestyle. Her junior and senior years she was again runner-up in the 100-yard breaststroke and as a senior captured the championship in the 200-yard freestyle. Her sister, Christine Simmons Simatacolos, was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2015 and was part of the first three of Carmel’s string of state championships. Her brother, Greg Simmons, was also on four state championship teams for the Carmel boys. Katie continued her swimming career at Northwestern University, where she was awarded the Joseph H Trienens endowed a scholarship, competed in the NCAA championships and captained her team. She graduated in 2004 and in 2006 with Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Speech and Language Disorders and works as a Speech Language Pathologist. She currently resides in La Grange, Illinois with her husband, Major David Smart and children, Andrew and Emily.
