Doug Elenz

Michigan City Elston High School, 1977 – 81


Elenz__DougDoug Elenz swam for Michigan City Elston High School from 1977-81.  He earn a total of four individual titles, claiming the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke events in 1980 and 1981. He broke the state record in the 100-yard backstroke in both 1980 and 1981, becoming the first to swim the event under 53 seconds his junior year and then diving under the 53 second mark his senior year with a 52.78. As a senior, he was also presented with the IHSAA Herman F. Keller Mental Attitude Award. Doug went on to swim at the University of Texas, where he was a two-time captain in 1984 and 1985.  He was a seven-time All-American, a recipient of the Team Leadership Award and a three-time recipient of the Team Spirit Award.  Doug was a 1988 US Masters National Champion and an All-American in the 100-yard backstroke.  Doug is an orthopaedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine in Austin Texas.  He and his wife Amber have one daughter and one son.  Doug continues to be involved in swimming through his medical practice.  He provides care for swimmers on both the University of Texas and the United States National swim teams.
