Brooke (Taflinger) Garcia

Kokomo High School, 1997 – 00


Brooke Taflinger Garcia swam for Kokomo High School from 1996-2000. Brooke finaled in her individual events at each of the four state championships. She climbed the ranks each year and reached the pinnacle her senior year with a state title in the 200-yard individual medley. She also claimed the runner-up title in the 500-yard freestyle in her junior and senior years. At the 2000 state championships, she was named the Mental Attitude Award Winner. Brooke continued her swimming career first at the University of Florida where she qualified for the 2001 NCAA championships. She then transferred back to her home state to Indiana University where she was a four-time All-American. She qualified for the NCAA championships all three years for the Hoosiers. She was also a two-time Big Ten champion and set school and conference records in the 400-yard individual medley. She also set the school standard in the 200-yard individual medley and 200-yard breaststroke. Brooke also earned academic accolades at IU earned Academic All-Big Ten honors and was named an Alpha Beta Honorary. Brooke also competed at the 2000 and 2004 US Olympic Trials in the 200 and 400-meter individual medley events. Professionally Brooke is a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist who started the Adapted Recreation program for Carmel Parks and Recreation. She has won awards from both the Indiana Autism Society and Indiana Parks and Recreation. She currently resides in Navarre, Florida with her husband Jamie, and three children.
