Al Fager

Kokomo Haworth High School, 1976 – 78


“Big Al” swam for Kokomo Haworth High School from 1976-78. He was a two-time individual state champion. As a sophomore, was runner-up in the 200-yard freestyle and touched third in the 500-yard freestyle. His junior year, he was runner-up in both the 100-yard and 200-yard freestyle events. As a senior, at the 1978 championships, he reached the top of the podium winning both the 200-yard and 500-yard freestyle events. He set a new state record in the 200-yard freestyle swimming it in 1:41.52, the second-fastest high school time in the country that year. Al continued swimming on a scholarship at Purdue University. He set a school record in the 200-yard freestyle and four total freshmen records. Al currently resides in Irvington. He stays busy with his involvement in Back on my Feet, a nonprofit organization that helps the homeless reengage with society.
