William “Bill” Bass

Chesterton High School, 2006 – 09


William “Bill” Bass swam for Chesterton High School from 2005-2009 where he was a three-time state champion. He placed fourth in the 500-yard freestyle in both his freshman and sophomore years, then won the event as a junior and a senior. In his senior year, he also won the 200-yard freestyle after placing runner-up as a junior. Bass was also an integral member of the Chesterton relays. He won a gold in each of the three relays, the 400-yard freestyle relay his sophomore year, the 200-yard freestyle relay his junior year and the 200-yard medley relay his senior year. Bass helped Chesterton to win two team titles in 2008 and 2009, his junior
and senior years. Bass continued his swimming career at the University of Notre Dame. He was one of a record nine Notre Dame swimmers to compete at the 2013 NCAA Championships, claiming honorable mention All-America status with the Irish 800-yard freestyle relay. He set Notre Dame records in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard butterfly as well as three relay records. Bass was named the 2012 Most Outstanding Swimmer at the Big East Championships his junior year as he claimed the Big East titles in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100-yard butterfly. Bass also competed at the 2012 US Olympic Trials in the 200-meter individual medley. Bass completed his undergraduate degree at Notre Dame and went on to earn a Master’s Degree in Photography and Digital Imaging from Indiana University where he is currently employed as an exhibition designer. Bass and his wife Cecilia just had their first child, William Quinn in February of this year. Bass’ parents are William and Jean, and sisters Ruth Ficaro and Mae Bass who also swam for Chesterton.
