Munice Burris High School, 1958 – 59
John S. Walker was a swimmer and diver for Muncie Burris High School. At the 1958 state championships, John claimed the silver medal in diving. In his senior year, at the 1959 championships, John won the diving event and also finished as runner-up in the 100-yard breaststroke, leading his team to a third-place finish. Walker’s coach, Dr. Bob Korsgaard, is also a Hall of Fame inductee. Walker went on to dive at Indiana University under Hall of Fame Coach Hobie Billingsley. Walker was a three-year letterman. While diving for Coach Billingsley he competed at the AAU Championships and finished fifth, mostly behind his IU teammates and Olympians. Walker continued to be active in diving as a coach at Evanston Township High School in Illinois, where he coached his divers to a state championship. He then went to the collegiate ranks as the diving coach at the The University of Minnesota, where he coached Craig Lincoln to a bronze medal in the 3-meter springboard at the 1972 Olympics. Walker then moved on to Harvard University where he coached for 15 years. He had two national champions, Pam Stone and Dan Watson. Walker finished his career at Harvard in the Office for Information Technology which led to consulting work “Teaching the Process of Teaching.” Walker now resides in South Carolina with his wife Leslie. They have five children and 10 grandchildren.
