South Bend Central High School, 1938 – 42
John Kujawa, a South Bend Central High School graduate, was a four-time individual state champion. His first title came as a freshman in the 100-yard freestyle at the 1938-39 state championships. His sophomore year he was a double champion, again winning the 100-yard freestyle and adding the 50-yard freestyle to his record. As a junior, in 1940-41 he again won the 50-yard freestyle. He also contributed to South Bend Central’s dominance during this time period with a team state championship in 1938-39 and a runner-up finish 1939-40.
