South Bend Riley High School, 1956 -60


John won two individual events and was a part of three state championship relays during his career at South Bend Riley from 1956-60. As a freshman, he won the 100-yard butterfly/breaststroke event. He earned state championship honors in the 100-yard backstroke his senior year. In addition, he was a part of the 200 medley relay team which won the state championship three consecutive years. John played an integral role in the South Bend Riley State Championship teams in 1957 and 1958. John continued his swimming career at the United States Naval Academy, where he attained pool records in the 100 and 200-yard butterfly. John earned his degree and commissioned an Ensign, USN, from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis in 1964. He was designated a naval aviator in 1965 and flew combat operations in light attack aircraft with the U.S. Seventh Fleet in North Vietnam. He also served as a jet flight instructor with the Naval Air Training Command. He left active duty in 1970 and served as a council member and mayor of San Carlos, California from 1979 to 1989. He is a member, chair, or president of several boards and commissions, including South County Fire Authority, South Bayside System Authority, San Mateo County Regional Planning Committee, the Airport Land Use Committee, and Senior Citizens’ Center Authority. John and his wife Constance have three children.
