Anderson / Carmel High Schools, 1983 – 87
Heidi Hafner swam for both Anderson High School and Carmel High School contributing to team state championships at both schools while claiming four individual titles and three relay titles. While swimming for Anderson, Heidi earned three individual, two relay and two team state titles. Her freshman year she won the 100-yard butterfly and swam the backstroke leg of the winning 200-yard medley relay. Her sophomore year she won both the 100-yeard backstroke and the 100-yard butterfly and was on the winning 400-yard freestyle relay. As a senior at Carmel, she won the backstroke again in 1986, setting a national record of 56.66. As a result, she was placed in the Amateur Athletes Hall of Fame in Jamestown Pennsylvania, and she was featured in Sports Illustrated “Faces in the Crowd”. She was also swam the backstroke leg on Carmel’s winning 200-yard medley relay and was part of Carmel’s first state championship team in their long streak. Heidi competed at both the 1984 and 1988 US Olympic Swimming Trials. Heidi has coached a young age group team for Carmel Swim Club as well. She lives in Carmel with her husband Ken and their three children.
