South Bend Jackson/South Bend Riley High Schools Coach, 1967 – 95
Dave Dunlap was at the helm of South Bend Jackson High School from 1967-75. Jackson High School closed in 1975. He then became the coach at South Bend Riley High School from 1975-95. His Riley teams won three state titles in three different decades: 1978, 1986, and 1995. His state runner-up titles came in 1972, 1973, 1975, 1976, 1979, 1980, and 1983. In addition, his teams earned 22 sectional titles, produced 23 individual and relay state champions and two IHSAA Herman F. Keller Mental Attitude Award winners. Dave coached 17 All-Americans, plus five relay All-American teams and three honorable mention All-Americans. His overall won-loss record is 357-41. Dave’s individual honors are extensive. He earned State Coach of the Year in 1971, 1978, and 1986. He was a runner-up to the National Coach of the Year recipient from Indiana in 1979. He received the NISCA Outstanding Service Award in 2001, and received a Sagamore of the Wabash in 1995. Dave is retired and lives in South Bend with his wife, Billie. They have three children and two grandchildren.
