Columbus High School, 1962 – 66
Chick Newell graduated from Columbus High School in 1966. He won the 100-yard breaststroke three years in a row at the 1963, 1964, and 1965 state championship meets. He set the state record at the 1964 championships with a time of 1:05.0. He swam on three state championship 200-yard medley relay teams for Columbus. During his high school swimming career the Columbus boys swim team won three team championships and finished runner-up in the fourth year.
Chick continued his involvement in swimming coaching for 31 years. Chick won the Jack Cramer Ideals of Athletic Competition Award. The Columbus North High School Natatorium was named the Charles (Chick) Newell Natatorium in his honor. Chick passed away in 2003.
