Columbus North High School, 1956 – 60
In 1958, Charlie finished 3rd in the 200-yard free and was a member of the state champion 200 freestyle relay, setting a state record in the process. In 1959, Charlie won the 200-yard free and set a state record in the process. In 1960, Charlie also finished 1st in that same event, again setting a state record. He was also a part of the state champion 200-yard medley relay record-setting team. Charlie went on to swim at Oklahoma University and was an All-American in the 200 free in 1962. There he won eight individual Big 8 Swimming Championships, earning 1962 NCAA Swimming All-American 220 yard free honors and was a 1964 NCAA Swimming All-American in the 500 yard free. Incidentally, 1962 was the last year the NCAA Swimming Championships competed at 220 yards, 440 yards, and 1500 meters, which meant the finish was in the middle of the pool. Beginning in 1963, the freestyle events were changed to 200 yards, 500 yards, and 1650 yards. Charlie’s more recent activities include Chairman, President, and CEO of the Florida law firm AKERMAN, LLP-1994-2002, Chairman of the Board of Directors, the Coconut Grove Bank of Miami Florida, and is currently a Consultant to law firm AKERMAN, LLP. Charlie has served his community in a variety of capacities, including as a member of the Florida Governor Lawton Chiles Commission on Homeless from 1992-1993, and the National Kidney Foundation of Florida. Board of Trustees. Charlie is a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation, the Oklahoma Bar Association (Inactive), and the Florida Bar Association. He has been married to Isabelle Russell Schuette for the past 40 years.
