South Bend Clay High School, 1973 – 77
Jeanne Proteau swam for South Bend Clay High School. She won four individual state swimming titles. At the inaugural IHSAA girls swimming and diving championships in 1974, she won the 100-yard butterfly and the 400-yard freestyle helping her team to a runner-up finish. At the 1975 state championships, she repeated as champion in both the 100-yard butterfly, breaking her own state record, and the 400-yard freestyle events. That year she and her South Bend Clay teammates also won the 400-yard freestyle relay, establishing a new state record, and helping the team to another team runner-up finish.
Jeanne has served as the head coach of the South Bend Adams and South Bend Riley High Schools and earned five Sectional Coach of the Year awards from her peers. Jeanne was also a three-time Northern Indiana Conference Coach of the Year. She is currently employed as an escrow manager at Meridian Title Corporation and lives with her husband Duane Troyer in South Bend.
