Bloomington High School, 1968-70
Bill Armstrong swam for Bloomington High School from 1967-70 and competed at the state championships all four years. Armstrong was runner-up in the 100 backstroke in his freshman and sophomore years and then won the event his junior year. He was also runner-up in the 50 freestyle in his junior and senior years. As a captain of the team, Armstrong helped Bloomington to a team championship his senior year. He was named the IHSAA outstanding swimmer of the 1970 championships. Armstrong was a multisport athlete at Bloomington High School, where he also lettered in football and baseball. His football teams went undefeated in the 1968 and 1969 seasons and won the South Central Conference while the baseball team was state tournament runner-up in 1969. Armstrong went on to play football and baseball at Indiana University where he is a three-time letterman in both sports. He continued to swim through the IU intramural program and won the 50-yard backstroke all four years. As a senior, Armstrong received the IU Gimbel Award and the Bo McMillin Award. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Biology in 1974 and his medical degree in 1978 from Indiana. Armstrong was an orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine in Atlanta from 1984-2011, serving as chief medical officer for aquatic sports at the 1996 Olympic Games. In 2017 he received the ZG Clevenger Award from Indiana University, which is bestowed to an alumnus who has made outstanding contributions to IU through service to its athletic program. Armstrong, now retired, lives in Atlanta with his wife, Karen, an avid swimmer. His daughter Katie was also an accomplished swimmer and triathlete in Georgia.
