2022 Girls State Meet Summary – Carmel’s win streak is still intact surprising no one. An amazing seven new state records were established by many and Indiana continues to be the best girls swimming state in the nation. Senior Kristina Paegle of Bloomington South was a double meet winner and she established new meet records in the 100 and 200 freestyle . Devon Kitchel of Zionsville won both the 200 IM (three in a row) and the 100 breaststroke. Freshman standouts from Carmel, Alex Shackell set a record in the 100 butterfly and teammate Lynsey Bowen tied the 2015 record in the 500 freetyle. Both girls were on the winning 400 freestyle relay. Lilian Christianson of Penn won back to back titles in the 50 freestyle breaking the record. Berit Berglund of Carmel set a new record in the 100 backstroke winning it for three years in a row. The final meet record was set by Carmel’s 200 Medley relay. Center Grove Mia Prusiecki won diving and the Northridge girls placed 2,3,and 6.
2022 Boys State Meet Summary – Carmel started off with their medley relay setting a new state meet record and a NEW National record. They won their eighth straight title with the second highest point total in state history. Zionsville finished second and Fishers third. Michael Schott of Culver Academies won the schools first ever state title by capturing the 200 freestyle. Thereafter Danville’s Holden Higbie captured their school’s first title in Diving. Will Modglin of Zionsville won two state titles in 100 backstroke the 200 I.M. with the I.M. being a record setting performance. Matthew Klinge of Harrison (West Lafayette) won the 50 freestyle. Kyle Ponsler of Fishers won the 500 freestyle after missing out on a title in the 200 freestyle. Carmel’s Aaron Shackell was the 100 butterfly champ. He and his sister, Alex Shackell are the first brother – sister duo to win a title in the same event in the same year in IHSAA history.
