Tom Hoyer

South Bend Central High School Coach, 1949 – 59


Hoyer__Tom_1Tom Hoyer coached high school swimming between the years of 1949 and 1959 at South Bend Central High School. During that 10 year period his teams won the state championship in 1955 and were runners-up three times.  Additionally, Coach Hoyer produced 11 individual state champions. He coached at his alma mater where he was a standout swimmer and football player.  He contributed to two state championships boys swimming titles for South Bend Central teams in the 1930’s. Tom graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1942 with a physical education degree. He was drafted and entered the Air Force upon the completion of his senior year. Tom completed his duties with the Air Force, and in 1949 he was hired as a social studies teacher, the head swimming coach and assistant football coach at South Bend Central. He retired as an Air Force Lt. Colonel.  Tom passed away in 2010.
