Kubly__PatPat Kubly was a four-time state individual champion for Kokomo High School.  He won the 200-yard individual medley in 1963 and 1965, the latter year setting a state record by four seconds with a time of 2:07.8.  He also won the 100-yard backstroke twice, in 1965 (also a state record) and 1966, his senior year. Pat was a high school All-American in 1965.  He continued his swimming career at Indiana State University.  There he was coached by another Indiana High School Hall of Fame member, Duane Barrows, who led Columbus to six state championships.  Pat was a co-captain and earned collegiate All-American status. Pat’s claim to fame was that he was once ranked in the top 25 in the world in his events.  “It’s not like it was yesterday,” said Kubly, trying to recall his days on the team. “I remember getting out of practice and sitting outside, waiting for my father to come pick me up. My hair would be frozen by the time he got there. Sitting out there those winters, I can’t believe we did that. I never thought anything would come of it, other than my mother making those scrapbooks for me.” He is now a letter carrier in Tampa, Florida. He and his wife JoAnn have three children.
