Hammond High School Coach, 1951 – 72
Julius Papais coached at Hammond High School, from 1951 until 1972. During his career, Hammond’s boys swimming and diving teams earned three state championship titles. Overall, Coach Papais honed the skills of 17 individual state champions. “Pape”, as he was known, was a 1938 graduate of Hammond High School where he was an All-American in football, and a graduate of the University of Alabama where he played and coached football. Papais was also inducted into the Hammond Sports Hall of Fame in 1990.
