Janaka Biyanwila

Bloomington North High School, 1980 – 83


Janaka_BiyanwilaJanaka Biyanwila, a native of Colombo, Sri Lanka, was a Bloomington North student-athlete from 1980- 1983. He won two high school diving state titles his junior and senior years. While in high school, he also participated in the 1987 Asian Games in Dehli, India, as a representative of Sri Lanka. Prior to his experience in the states, Janaka was the Sri Lankan National Diving Champion from 1977 until 1980. He also held that title from 1992 until 1997. Janaka continued his diving career at the University of Maryland, where he earned the Atlantic Coast Conference Diver of the Year title in 1987. After graduation from Maryland, Janaka served as Head Diving Coach for the men’s and women’s teams at the University of Utah from 1987-92, where he earned his Master’s degree. He went on to earn a Ph.D. from the University of Western Australia. Janaka competed extensively in international events including the 1996 Atlanta Olympics representing Sri Lanka. He is currently living in Sydney, Australia where he is a temporary academic at the University of New South Wales. Janaka has one daughter, Azahlea.
