David Phelps

Michigan City Rogers High School, 1973 – 77


David Phelps swam for Michigan City Rogers High School, where he was a freestyle standout winning four individual state championships.  His first title came in the 200-yard freestyle his sophomore year.  His junior year he repeated as 200-yard freestyle champion and also won the 500-yard freestyle.  As a senior he won the 200-yard freestyle for a third time, setting the state record in the preliminaries.  David earned high school All-American status in 1976 and 1977.

He continued swimming at Indiana University where he was a four-year letterman and part of the Big Ten Conference championship swim team in 1979 and 1980.  He also earned All-American status in 1979. He was a Big Ten finalist all four years of his college career.  In 1980, David qualified for the Olympic Trials and was a member of the 1980 Summer Long Course National Champion Cincinnati Marlins. Following his college career, David was active in Masters swimming, winning many national competitions that specialized in long distance and open water swimming.  Currently, David is a regional manager at Elk Corp, and he lives in Carmel. He enjoys hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, golf, and family activities.
