Brian Hartley

North Central High School, 1998 – 2002


Brian Hartley, a distance specialist, swam at North Central High School.  He won his first title as a sophomore, winning the 200-yard freestyle.  His junior and senior years he won both the 200-yard and 500-yard freestyle, setting a state record of 4:25.73 in the 500 free that stood for eight years. In addition, Brian was the recipient of the IHSAA Herman F. Keller Mental Attitude Award in 2002.  After high school, he went to the University of Florida, where he was a part of the 800-yard freestyle relay team that won the 2005 NCAA championship, setting an NCAA and US Open record.  In 2004, he also attained a sectional championship in the 1650-yard freestyle.  During his college career, Brian was a ten-time All-American.  Brian’s family consists of his father, Robert Hartley Jr., and his brothers, Robert Hartley III, and John Hartley.
