Andrew McVey

Beech Grove High School, 1982 – 86


Andy was a two-time individual state champion for Beech Grove High School.  His senior year he won the 50 and 100-yard freestyle events, setting state records in both.  The 50-yard freestyle record stood for 14 years.  During his senior year, he also received the IHSAA Herman F. Keller Mental Attitude Award.

He went on to attend the University of Illinois and received All-American honors in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle events, and was a member of the Big Ten All-Conference Team in 1990.  Andy returned to the Indianapolis area and coached the Greenwood Gators in the early 1990s, where he worked with Ben Dexter, who later became the state champion in the 50-yard freestyle for Roncalli High School in 2002.

Andy moved to Sweden in 1994, marrying his high school sweetheart, an exchange student from Sweden.  He coached Claes Andersson, an alumnus of Indiana University, who won the Swedish Junior Championships and went on to win a gold medal for Sweden in the 200-meter freestyle relay at the European Championships in 2000.  Andy ended his coaching career after this accomplishment.  Andy is married to Anette McVey and has three children: Alexander, Christopher, and Kelly.  He devotes his time to his three children and their sporting activities.  His oldest son represented the US at the Floorball World Championships in Gothenburg.  Another son represents Sweden’s 17-year-old National Team in soccer.  His daughter is currently playing handball.
